Document translation, Document category: Identity & Civil Registry

National Identity Card

A national identity card confirms the holder's identity and, in many countries, their citizenship and personal identification number. Both sides of the card are normally translated.

Typical translation use cases

Identity verification for notaries and banks
Residence and citizenship applications
Supporting a visa application alongside the passport

Practical considerations

Identity numbers, dates and issuing authority must be reproduced exactly.
Older card formats may contain handwritten entries that should be clearly legible in the scan.

Requirements vary

Requirements for this document vary according to the receiving institution and the destination country. Please check with the institution that will receive it whether it needs a standard translation, a certified translation by a sworn translator, notarisation, an apostille or consular legalisation. These are separate steps and one cannot replace another.
